15 Ways to Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis Fatigue

Multiple Sclerosis Fatigue is one of the number one symptoms and complaints of multiple sclerosis. And unfortunately one of the #1 reasons that many people with MS end up on disability. Multiple Sclerosis fatigue is real, and a prominent symptom for as many as 85-95% of those with MS.

Here are 15 ways to fight against fatigue. Just the little things that you do each and every day can make a difference.

1. Be aware of medication side effects. Anti-depressants are well known to have a side effect of fatigue. Talk with your doctor and determine what side effects each medication your on has.

2. Drink a sufficient amount of water: Dehydration can cause fatigue and many people with MS don't like to drink water because they suffer from an over active bladder.- I'm guilty of this one. Our bodies need water for energy and to remove toxins, so don't scrimp on this one.

3. Improper breathing: Shallow, short breathes will reduce the amount of oxygen coming to your cells, therefore making you feel fatigued.

4. Not exercising: Ok, so you've heard this one a number of times on how exercise increases energy. There's no excuses regardless of what level you are at with your MS.

5. Depression: Not accepting multiple sclerosis, being depressed about your current life will cause depression and the by product fatigue. Using techniques to change your mental outlook and your thinking such as "Theatre of the Mind". Will allow you to relive all the good things that happened to you in the past and therefore remove depression out of your life.

6. Too much heat: Heat increases your disabilities and fatigue and just makes you feel bad. Anytime out in warm weather I can go from walking normally to barely walking at all. Stay out of the heat, use a cooling vest, and look for activities that keep you cool like swimming.

7. Avoid Simple Carbohydrates: White bread, white pasta, and sugar slow you down and fatigue you. Keep up on a diet of whole foods consisting of fruits and veggies.

8. Vary Routine: Toss up your normal daily schedule. Each one of us needs some variety each day.Plan something for the future that you can look forward to.

9. Experiment with aromatherapy: Peppermint and jasmine essentials oils are known to be energizing. Put a few drops on your collar of your shirt to smell during the day, or take the container of peppermint with you and take a sniff when your feeling fatigued.

10. Go to bed at the same time every night Most people don't get enough sleep, and leg spasticity may be keeping you up at night.

11. Reduce your weight: Being overweight will make you feel fatigued. Watch what you're eating and exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

12. Not Pacing, Planning, or Prioritizing Your Life: It's important to have balance in your life. It's important to balance fatigue and rest. Devise a plan on what needs to be done and organize your tasks so that they are manageable.

13. Eating Breakfast Everyday: When you first wake up your blood sugar is low, eating a proper breakfast is an energy booster. Skipping breakfast drains your energy contributing to fatigue.

14. Check out your iron levels: If you're not getting enough iron that you may feel fatigued. Eat fish, eggs, fortified cereals, and beans to fight against multiple sclerosis fatigue.

15. Last but not least: Fatigue is a symptom of MS and you should not feel bad when asking for help. Spend your energy on what matters and determine what you can ask others for in helping you conserve your valuable resources.

The Learning Disability Question - What Are 3 Types of Learning Disabilities?

I frequently get asked by parents if I think their child has a learning disability. Sometimes the child has been tested at school and the parents have been told that he doesn't need or meet the qualifications for resource or special education classes. Initially this information may come as a relief, but when their child continues to struggle in school I often get a call at our learning center.

Over the past 20 years working with parents, students and schools I have learned and observed some things that I often explain to parents in our center. A learning disability is usually defined as a condition that either prevents or significantly hinders a child from learning basic skills at the same rate as most students of the same age. The severest cases take the form of :

* Dyslexia - an extreme difficulty learning to read due to a difference in the way the brain processes written and spoken language.
* Dysgraphia - extreme difficulty in automatically remembering and mastering the sequence of muscle motor movements needed in writing letters or numbers.
* Dyscalculia - extreme difficulty visualizing numbers, ordering numbers properly, sequencing specific steps and formulas for completing mathematical calculations.

It is also important to note that learning differences can occur in various degrees. Not every child that struggles to read is a classic dyslexic. Other factors may be at play. Not all children develop at exactly the same rate. Parents with more than one child are well aware of this.

One child might start walking at 10 months and another may not take his first steps till he is 14 months. The same with speech; one child may be saying words at 1 yr old and another may not say much that is intelligible till he is closer to two years old.

Likewise, when reading is introduced in school, a particular child may just not be developmentally ready - yet. Finally, some children could grasp the particular subject when it is presented if given more time for drill and practice, but the curriculum is moving too fast to allow this.

When parents become frustrated that their child doesn't qualify for special services at school the usual reason is that although the child may not be learning at the same rate as other children there may not be a big enough point difference between his ability level (I.Q.) and their performance level (the degree of difficulty he exhibits) when tested by the school diagnostician to qualify him/her under state guidelines.

For children who "fall through the cracks" for public school resources or are in a private school where special services are not offered, there are things that can be done in and outside the classroom to help these children succeed whether they have a true learning disability of some form, were simply not maturationally ready for the subject being taught, or just needed a little more time to "catch on".

* A private tutor or learning center can contacted.
* A child can be "held back" to give time for maturity to occur.
* Parents can explore the possibility of moving their child to a less challenging academic environment if they feel the current school is too fast paced.
* They can consider the option of home schooling their child.
* Parents can implement strategies at home to help their child catch up.

Your First Step to Vibrant Health and Life Energy!

How can we influence our Energy? How does the lack of energy result in lack of success?

Energy is the key factor to success in every area of our lives. Somebody who feels tired, worn out and has depressing thoughts is more likely to avoid action and be underperforming.

On the other hand, when a person is energetic, highly motivated and thinking positively, their actions are constant and they can perform at the top level.

Depressed, overwhelmed = no action Exited, full of energy = great action

At the end of the day, all the results you produce are dependent on the state you are in and the energy you have.

Factors that influence life energy and the state you are in: Representations/Meaning, Memory, Internal communication, Physiology, Breathing, Nutrition

Tip: To take most out of these factors we recommend that you get yourself a notebook small enough so you can take it with you wherever you go. Use your notebook daily from both sides. On one side you write my successes, on the other side you are writing down inspirations and questions.

As one key to success is what kind of questions we are asking ourselves, we want to inspire you and unleash the hidden potential within you.

Lets start with some of your success stories (Memories): It will be easy for you to remember three events when you performed at your best, felt excited, perhaps happy, or had this great feeling of success.

Imagine yourself clearly and vividly in these situations. You can see the colours around you, is there any sound? What do you say to yourself? Are there people around you? What do they do and say? How would you describe the dominant feeling?

Describe three situations as clearly, as possible using all of your senses including sight, sound, smell, touch and feelings...

Simon Thomson Memory example: I'm going to describe for you a memory of mine that gives me goosebumps every time I recount it. It gives me the kind of "warm fuzzies" that make me want to get up and move no matter what I'm doing! It was in 2003 when I won the first Olympic Selection Trial at the Coff's Harbour Triathlon and booked my seat to Athens.

While there was good prize money on offer that day, every Australian knew that first place was automatic selection and that was the only position that counted:

As I rounded the last corner into the finish chute I had well over a minute's lead and a certain victory when I broke the tape ahead of me. This allowed for the emotions to pour freely as the magnitude of what I had achieved began to hit me.

All the pain I had been managing for the last 2 hours simply melted away from my conscious mind and the grimace broke into an enormous smile. I raised my arms to the roaring crowd that were celebrating this special moment with me.

The noise was loud and constant and only surpassed by the voice of the commentator that verbalised my movements down the final 50 meters. The sun was shining brightly and the oppressive heat had soaked buckets of sweat from my body during the race.

The race bunting and sponsors signage was bright and matched the summer beach clothing of the crowd that were extending their arms towards me over the barrier.

I was now skipping and dancing towards the finish line and slapping high fives the kids as I passed them. Despite the energy I had expended during the race, I now felt light as a feather and as strong and powerful as I've ever felt before.

As I passed under the finish arch I grabbed the tape with both hands and raised it in salute above my head. In one movement I turned to my left to see the crowd that included my best friends from home and with arms raised I let out a primal roar that came from an unknown place within.

The noise was drowned out by the crowd and with three steps towards my friends I was suddenly engulfed in a group hug with 15 people over the fence that threatened to sap the last few gasps of breath within me. As I broke free the tears began to flow and I felt the full force of the emotions erupting from everyone around me. I was feeling on top of the world!

You don't need to win a triathlon to have these feelings. I've felt these emotions doing many different things in my life, so be prepared to celebrate many more such great events in your near future!

Have fun with these memories and open your mind for the little every day successes that happen all the time and write them down in your notebook.

Tips to Gain Back Your Mood

Every one of us is not excused in having a bad day. Sometimes, it just suddenly pops out of nowhere. And yes, having a bad mood can really ruin a seemingly perfect day. In most cases, if that happens, everything will then be affected; your attitude towards work, the way you handle your problems and so on.

If you want to continue the sunny disposition you have despite the bad mood you are feeling, you can always do some little things to divert your attention. Here are some of a few things you can do to gain back the mood before it was ruined.

Help a Stranger

Helping someone in need is really satisfying and very heart warming. Once you help someone, you'll feel happier and it would uplift your spirit; thus, takes your bad mood away. Helping a stranger does not matter if it's big or not. You can always open a door for the elderly or to a girl. You can give directions for those who need one or you can also give some of your coins to beggars.

A Change of Scenery

When you feel like you are going to blow already, walk out of the place and have a change of scenery. If you're still going for work, you can always change your route. While talking on the phone, instead of sitting down, why not stand up every once in a while? Try to do things you are not accustomed of doing and notice how this can transform your mood.

Learn To Clean Up

Having a messy place can heighten up your bad mood. So, to feel lighter, your surrounding and your environment should be light too! To do this, why not do away with some things that just add up the clutter? Organize your things and fix up the room. You can also vent out your anger or mood in this kind of activity. Yet, cleaning up does not necessarily means you clean everything in one sitting or in a day. You can start by cleaning up your desk or your drawer or the cabinet perhaps.

Take a Hot Bath

If you are in the house and you feel down, take a hot bath. Water is known to be very therapeutic especially if it's warm. It relaxes your muscles as well as lift up your mood a bit.

Listen To Someone Else

I know how you would like to share something about yourself. How you would want to open up to your emotions. But sometimes, especially when you are down, it is nice to listen to someone else's story. Let the person open up to you and you'll be surprised by the many realizations you can make while listening to someone else's story.

Call a Friend

A friend is always there if you need some help. If you think that the problem is very hard to solve and you need help, ask a friend to listen to you. A friend will always be there for you to listen to you. He/she might even give you good advices. So, do not be shy and ask others for help.

There are still a lot of things that you can do to take your bad mood away. You can do shopping, have a massage, go to the spa or you can sip coffee with friends. Yet, one thing is for sure; do not let your bad mood ruin your whole day.

Purchasing a Used Ultrasound Machine

Buying a used and refurbished ultrasound machine is a great way to save money, but is is a wise choice? It depends on who you buy from.

Equipment brokers find equipment at one location and drop ship it to another. This is usually done without taking physical possession of the equipment, without a pre-purchased inspection or any re-manufacturing of the ultrasound equipment. It is a business transaction completed by simply pushing paper. It can be risky for you and your patients to purchase such equipment. Avoid any seller who offers equipment "as is" - an ultrasound machine is too critical to your practice to risk a costly breakdown or a misdiagnosis. Poorly maintained, serviced or mis-calibrated ultrasound machines can cause injury to operators and patients and cost you significantly more money in the long run.

An OEM certified ultrasound service company, on the other hand, will regularly purchase pre-owned equipment only after an engineer makes a physical inspection and decides that the unit is worth reconditioning. They will follow an extensive checklist for pre-inspection, inspection, diagnostics and verification after reconditioning. Having the remanufactured ultrasound certified by the OEM completely reduces the risk of buying equipment from the secondary market. It is this level of value added service and attention to detail that separates a certified service company from an equipment broker.

A fully-certified ultrasound service company will provide you with an ultrasound machine that:

* Meets ALL OEM specifications
* Is clean and sterilized, inside and out
* Has had defective, worn and out of revision parts replaced
* Uses up-to-date software
* Passes extended diagnostics tests on the electronics and mechanical operations
* Comes with a one year warranty
* Has the service staff capable of servicing your machine
* Functions just as it should and just as you would expect.

It is critical to buy from a vendor who stands behind their products. Since you will use your ultrasound machine regularly, you need to be confident that it will operate properly and dependably. Confidence in a used and refurbished ultrasound machine can only come when you purchase your equipment from an OEM certified full service company.
